Comparing Prosody Across Many Languages
نویسندگان
چکیده
An empirical metric is developed to measure similarity or distance between the prosodic systems of diverse languages. Two physical variables which carry prosodic information, F0 and amplitude envelope modulation, are used as inputs in a pairwise language discrimination task. A novel neural network model is trained to discriminate among pairs of languages drawn from a set of ten languages in a telephone speech database. Network performance is used to obtain a distance metric for each pair, allowing overall similarity relationships within the 10 language set to be identi ed. Results are presented for F0 alone, in which Mandarin and Japanese are found to be clearly distinguished from all other languages in the database, and French is found to be clearly distinguishable, even from related Indo-European languages. Using amplitude envelope modulation alone, a cluster of languages usually described as syllable-timed is identi ed. Vietnamese and Farsi are found to be rhythmically distinct from languages conventionally described as stress-, syllableor mora-timed. When both variables are provided to the networks, the results provide an empirical measure of prosodic distance among the languages. PACS numbers: 43.70.Kv 43.72.Bs

Developing a Framework of Communicative Functions for the Study of Speech Prosody
This is a proposal in favour of proceeding from communicative function to linguistic form, rather than the reverse, for an insightful account of how humans communicate by speech in languages. A functional framework is developed that encompasses argumentation structures, declarative and interrogative functions, and expressive intensification. Such a function orientation can become a powerful too...
متن کاملPhonological diffusion in the Amazonian Vaupés
Amazonia is well known for its tremendous linguistic diversity, with some 250 languages representing over 50 distinct genetic groupings. Many of these languages are highly endangered, and only a fraction are well documented and described (Moore 2007). Yet, as documentation advances, they are a steady source of typological surprises, informing and revising our understanding of human language. Th...
متن کاملThe prosody of embedded coordinations in German and Hindi
This paper reports a cross-linguistic investigation into the syntax-prosody mapping in German and Hindi. For both languages, comparable speech production experiments were carried out, using ambiguous coordination structures with four names in different syntactic conditions. Pitch contours and duration values were compared at syntactic boundaries of the different coordination structures within a...
متن کاملAn Experimental Discourse-Neutral Prosodic Phrasing System for Mandarin Chinese
Normal human speech has a clear intonational and rhythmic character. This is true of many Pacific Rim languages and plays a particularly crucial role in the many tone languages of the region, such as Thai and Chinese. However, most computer speech systems fail to utilize prosody for disambiguation or increased naturalness. In this paper, we examine the contrasts in prosodic behavior across lang...
متن کاملA Measurement from Electroglottography: DECPA, and its Application in Prosody
The present study, drawing on recent research on the use of the derivative of electroglottographic signals, applies to the study of intonation a parameter called DECPA, “DerivativeEGG Closure Peak Amplitude”: the amplitude of the peak on the derivative of the EGG signal at glottal closure. A pilot study comparing DECPA, F0, global intensity and open quotient (in data from tone languages) sugges...
